Stephanie Taylor of Marshalltown has been selected as the first recipient of the new Doris Maxfield Memorial Nursing Scholarship. A $60,000 gift from the estate of Doris Maxfield was invested to create a $5,000 scholarship for students in the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/RN) program at Marshalltown Community College.
One outstanding ADN student will be selected by the MCC Nursing faculty each year to receive $5,000 toward his or her tuition and fees, until such time as the fund is exhausted.
Taylor is a 2003 graduate of Dalton High School in Ohio, and has been identified as an outstanding student in the current ADN class. She plans to continue working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, probably at the University of Iowa.
“I am so grateful to receive the Doris Maxfield Memorial Scholarship!” says Taylor. “Nursing school is costly in many ways, and this generous financial support helps to lift that burden, so I can focus more on my studies. Not only does this scholarship help me to complete my Associate Degree in Nursing program, but it is allowing me to take extra classes to work toward my Bachelor of Science in Nursing.”
Doris Maxfield
Doris Wilma Maxfield was born on Aug. 20, 1915, in rural Marshall County, one of eight children born to Gilbert and Martha (Page) Maxfield. She graduated from Albion High School in 1932 and the Deaconess School of Nursing in 1939. Doris worked at a hospital in Pasadena, CA, but proudly enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps at the onset of WWII. She was stationed at the 56th Evacuation Hospital, which followed the front lines up the Italian peninsula treating casualties and evacuating them to safer centers. After the war, Doris continued her nursing career in various hospitals in Europe and North Africa. She died in 2014, but her passion for nursing was a central theme in her life, and her legacy will help future nurses get their start in the profession.
